attendance
EVERYBODY, EVERY DAY !
Volusia County Schools expects parents to ensure their children are in school and on time, every day, all day. Research shows a high positive correlation between a student's attendance and achievement. Regular school attendance is important for building strong academic and social foundations in your child's educational and personal development. A child who misses even one day a week is missing valuable classroom instruction and the daily experience and connection of being part of the class. Students who stay home have a hard time coming back to school because they feel lost as the instruction and classroom life as moved on without them.
Although our teachers are wonderful about providing make-up work (please give the teacher 24 hours notice) and assessments, often the instruction that accompanies that work was missed and makes completing the work difficult for both the child and the parents. If a child is sick, has a fever or is throwing up, they should of course stay at home until they are better. However, parents and students with late night routines who have a difficult time getting up in the morning or students who have emotional issues or anxiety that make coming to school a challenge should contact Mrs. Maddox to discuss strategies for helping improve school attendance.
Florida law requires all students to attend school regularly and on time. Parents should notify the school if their child is sick by phoning 386-822-6986 and ask to speak to Mrs. Kraus at extension 21706. Students who have reached the 15 day absence mark must bring a doctors note to excuse all absences thereafter. Once students reach the 15 day mark a conference will be set with our School Social Worker Mrs. Wright, School Counselor Mrs. Maddox and classroom teacher to develop an attendance contract.
As of 2006, the state of Florida (Florida Statues 1003.02 [ 1 ][b]) has authorized School Boards to establish policies that allow accumulated unexcused tardies, regardless of when they occur during the school day, and early departures form school to be recorded as unexcused absences. Five tardies or check outs count as one unexcused absence. Please remember school starts at 7:55 am. Students arriving after 7:55 are tardy and parents need to sign in the front office and walk their child to class. School ends at 2:05 pm and checking your child out early impacts academics as significantly as arriving late each day.
