Fourth Grade
At the start of the school year, we learned about the role of the School Counselor, P.A.W.S., how to make introductions, how to give and receive compliments and how to make an apology.
During Red Ribbon Week we learned that drugs are powerful chemicals that change the way our bodies work. We applied that definition to street drugs, over the counter medicine and prescription medicine. We learned even those drugs that are meant to help us can be harmful if taken in too large a dose or incorrectly. Emphasis was placed on understanding the harmful effects of street drugs, the legal age for tobacco and alcohol, and the benefits and abuses of over the counter and prescription medication.
Anti-bullying strategies were covered in Bullyproofing, a series of lessons that defines the difference in conflict and bullying, teaches students what a bystander is and how to show confidence when standing up for themselves or others. We learned strategies for avoiding getting "hooked" by a bully and methods for handling bullies.
As time for FSA draws closer we will focus on School Success Skills and test taking skills.
We will end the year with state approved program called Child Safety Matters which focuses on personal safety, cyberbullying, peer pressure, good and bad touch and child abuse and neglect. An opt out form is available for parents who do not wish for their child to participate.
